Boston Ballet announced today the Company’s first tour to Ottawa, Canada to perform at The National Arts Centre, January 28 - 30, 2010. The Company will have three performances of George Balanchine’s Ballo della Regina, Sabrina Matthews’ ein von viel, Michel Fokine’s La Spectre de la Rose, Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun, and Jorma Elo’s Brake the Eyes.
“We are excited to again travel to uncharted territory and present Boston Ballet’s work to new audiences,” said Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen. “After successful international tours to Spain and Korea as well as major national engagements in New York, Washington D.C., California, and South Carolina, Boston Ballet is eager to perform in Canada and showcase the artistry and versatility that our Company is world-renowned for.”
The tour will highlight Boston Ballet’s diverse repertoire, bringing classic and new works to The National Arts Centre stage including Boston Ballet Resident Choreographer Jorma Elo’s critically acclaimed Brake the Eyes. Also featured is Canadian choreographer Sabrina Matthews’ ein von viel, which was originally created for Alberta Ballet when Nissinen was artistic director for the company, and made its U.S. premiere with Boston Ballet in 2008.
“Through touring, Boston Ballet serves as an ambassador for Boston, always taking the city’s name with us when we travel,” said Executive Director Barry Hughson. “Taking a new stage and performing before new audiences allows us to share the range and artistry of the Company and continue to expand access to the art form, an important part of Boston Ballet’s work as we look forward to our 50th anniversary.”
In 1980, Boston Ballet was the first American dance company to perform in the People’s Republic of China, the first stop on a five-country tour that included China, Hong Kong, Israel, France and Italy under the co-artistic directorship of E. Virginia Williams and Violette Verdy.
In July 2007, Boston Ballet embarked on its first international tour in 15 years. The six-week tour took the company to seven festivals in various regions of Spain. Two programs were presented throughout the tour, including Sorella Englund’s staging of August Bournonville’s La Sylphide, and an all-Balanchine bill of Serenade, Who Cares? and The Four Temperaments. Sold-out performances and resounding critical acclaim made this the largest and one of the most outstanding tours in Boston Ballet’s history. During the tour, the Company was honored with the attendance of many special guests including Queen Sofia of Spain.
In August 2008, Boston Ballet embarked on another international tour to Korea with Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room, and George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco. Boston Ballet was received enthusiastically by audiences and critics alike.
Additionally, the Company performed as part of the acclaimed Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, the Ballet Across America series at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, The Guggenheim’s Works & Process series in New York, New York, and three times in New York’s Fall for Dance, among others.
