An exciting promotion comes from Boston Ballet’s Center for Dance Education. In an unprecedented achievement, Isaac Akiba will be the first Citydance alumnus to receive a contract with the Boston Ballet Company. One of several Boston Ballet community-based outreach programs, Citydance is a scholarship dance opportunity offered to third-grade students in the Boston Public Schools. Designed to educate and introduce public school children to a variety of dance forms, Citydance offers nearly 3,000 students from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds a chance to dance. While several Citydance alumni have pursued professional careers with other companies around the country, Akiba will be the first to join Boston Ballet.Akiba, now 20 years old, was first introduced to the art of ballet through the Citydance program in 1998 as a third grader at the Agassiz School in Jamaica Plain. Following years of training at Boston Ballet School and an apprenticeship with Boston Ballet II, Akiba will perform as a member of Boston Ballet’s corps de ballet starting in the 2009-2010 season.Boston Ballet looks forward to the Company and School’s continued growth and excellence as it embarks on a spectacular new era at The Opera House in September 2009.
