1. What is the difference between the Beginner, Elementary/ Intermediate and Intermediate/ Advanced Levels?
Beginning - This is the ideal level for first time students, Boston Ballet Adult Beginner students, or those who would like to return to the dance studio after many years and are looking for a “refresher” course. Barre exercises will focus on developing a foundation in ballet technique and vocabulary. Centre exercises will include elements from barre work as well as the introduction of concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté and the introduction and/or review of basic turns and jumps.
Elementary/ Intermediate - Students are expected to be familiar with all barre exercises, including simple balances; concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté; and basic turns and jumps. Centre exercises combine elements of the above material into movement phrases of two to four different steps and emphasize increased proficiency.
Intermediate/Advanced - Students are expected to have acquired mastery of all barre exercises, including exercises on relevé, and balances in various poses; mastery of concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté; and mastery of a variety of turns and jumps. Centre exercises consist of extended combinations of movement, including turns, adagio, and petit and grand allegro, with emphasis on building proficiency, strength and speed.
2. Is there a dress-code?
No, the only traditional ballet attire we require of our adult students is ballet slippers. Otherwise, students wear what is easy to move in and makes them most at ease. For some, this is the traditional leotard and tights; for others, this is closer to typical work-out clothing – sweats, leggings, t-shirts. Whatever you choose to wear, we ask that it be form fitted, allow for freedom of movement and be comfortable. Longer hair should be pulled away from the face and dangling jewelry is discouraged.
3. Is there an end-of-program performance?
Yes, on the last day of ASDP, Friday, August 15th, the students will perform their Repertory in front of an audience of friends and family in the Grand Studio. Following the informal performance, everyone is invited to a reception to conclude the Adult Summer Dance Program.
4. Are Pilates mats provided?
Boston Ballet School has a limited number of Pilates mats for student use and recommend that students bring their own.
5. My summer plans have changed. How do I withdraw from ASDP?
Please contact the Office of Administration immediately at 617.456.6267. Tuition for ASDP is non-refundable execpt in cases of illness or injury as documented by a physician.
6. I am traveling to the Boston area for this program, where can I stay?
Students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements but we have some suggestions, check them out here >>
7. What is the Wait List policy?
Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. If the program has reached its maximum capacity when we receive your registration paper work, you will be notified by phone and/or email and placed on the waiting list. If a spot becomes available in the class, you will be notified and will have to confirm if you would like to join the class at that time. No money will be processed until you receive a place in the class.
All other questions should be directed to the MetroWest studio at 617.456.6263 or the Registrar at rockc@bostonballet.com.
