Approacing it's fifth year, Boston Ballet's Adult Summer Dance Program now offers adult students 18 and older a two week-long opportunity to study ballet, Pilates, modern and repertory.
To give you an idea of what is offered, in August 2008, we introduced a new third level of ballet instruction. Levels available were: beginner, elementary/ intermediate and intermediate/ advanced. Each level is limited to 25 students.
Beginning - This is the ideal level for first time students, Boston Ballet Adult Beginner students, or those who would like to return to the dance studio after many years and are looking for a “refresher” course. Barre exercises will focus on developing a foundation in ballet technique and vocabulary. Centre exercises will include elements from barre work as well as the introduction of concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté and the introduction and/or review of basic turns and jumps.
Elementary/ Intermediate- Students are expected to be familiar with all barre exercises, including simple balances; concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté; and basic turns and jumps. Centre exercises combine elements of the above material into movement phrases of two to four different steps and emphasize increased proficiency.
Intermediate/Advanced - Students are expected to have acquired mastery of all barre exercises, including exercises on relevé, and balances in various poses; mastery of concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté; and mastery of a variety of turns and jumps. Centre exercises consist of extended combinations of movement, including turns, adagio, and petit and grand allegro, with emphasis on building proficiency, strength and speed.
All ballet classes include live piano accompaniment.

What past participants have had to say about ASDP:
“It was wonderful to be taught by such highly skilled teachers. Their thorough knowledge of classical technique, their understanding of the adult student, and their individual attention and encouragement made the experience especially rewarding.”
- Marcia Matthysse, ASDP Student 2005, 2006
“Boston Ballet’s Adult Summer Dance Program is perfect! Not only was I able to fine-tune my technique, but the conditioning classes augmented my training and made me feel in shape. Learning the repertory, and then performing it for friends and family was the ideal way to culminate the program. I am already looking forward to Summer 2007!”
- ASDP Student 2006
Hope to see you next summer!
