SPAIN TOUR 2007

Diary of the Tour

Santander is the most picturesque city we have been to thus far. The green, lush mountains in the distance are decorated with red Spanish roofs sprinkled just right. The theatre opens out onto the harbor and I spent many a lunch break (5:00pm) watching sailboats drift slowly by. The company worked hard in Santander. We would travel to the theatre at noon, have ballet class, rehearse fro three hours, break for “lunch” and then perform. Our short stay passed super quickly and left everyone wanting more.

If you should ever travel to Santander there is one day trip you do not want to miss. Stop #1: Las Cuevas (the Caves) Del Castillo, located about 30 minutes southwest of Santander. These caves feature prehistoric artwork dating back 30,000 years. They are in red, yellow and black and depict 45 hands in negative space and over 120 animal paintings. To think I was standing on the same cave floor as the prehistoric man or woman doing the painting. It blows my mind how old “old” actually can be. In America, we are such a young civilization….adolescents still figuring out what colors to use on the wall to show what our life stands for. What do we want to be remembered for? What are our markings? Ballet only has heart-marking capabilities as of right now, but that is a different entry.

Stop #2 On your way back to Santander, save a good part of the day and see the Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno in Cantabria. I have never, ever been what you would call a zoo fan. They have always made me a little sad in the past. This Parque is amazing! Wide open spaces and rocky mountain faces would make anyone’s spirit take flight. The beasts have so much room to play. Sabi took some wonderful photos: bears, giraffes, ostrich, even lions and tigers played for his lens. We all agreed we’ve never seen such zoo animal activity before. The zoo is only really navigable by car because the animals have such an abundance of space to roam. A child would be in heaven, feeding the giraffes and counting the kangaroo babies.

It was a wonderful last day for everyone and a peaceful final evening in Santander. I turned in early after watching a Mel Gibson film dubbed in Spanish.
