SPAIN TOUR 2007

Diary of the Tour
by Sarah Wroth, Boston Ballet corps de ballet member

August 3 , 2007

How many people really get the opportunity to wear all wool, a shawl and hat at 35.5˚ Celsius in Spain? Not too darn many. This really is a crazy profession. 15 minutes, give or take, before La Sylphide starts, I run to make up to get my “old” on, then Jason (make up & wigs) puts my “Mamma” hair in, all the while solving any last minute cosmetic crises that should occur. I am James’ mother. I am a 25 year old portraying a woman twice my age, and you know what? I really like it. It satisfies some great part of my person who used to turn the dining room table into a grand sea ship with my little sister. I get to pretend I run the show in the first act of the ballet – a woman from Scotland whose clans and son’s marriage to Effie are top priority. Every dancer loves this challenge of becoming a different character. Sometimes the role has no dancing, like Madge, for example, but it is the most important character in a ballet. It is hard sometimes to watch your friends dance - to watch the corps bond as a unit without being in the dance with them, but I truly feel that if you can make the audience believe you are old, or evil, or in love, you are one step closer to commanding them as Odette or Giselle. It’s all learning. It’s all growth. Just right now its learning and growth in a turtle neck wool dress at 98˚ Farenheit.
