BOSTON BALLET
SPAIN TOUR 2007

I am going to make a conscious effort to be as positive as humanly possibly during the following entry…
The hotel in Santander offers us a variety of new and interesting challenges. First, it is put to us to find all the beauty an industrial park can hold. This is a tougher task because the only bar, the one in the hotel, closes at 11pm. Industrial buildings look more picturesque after a bar visit. There is a mall, the only mall, I should say, in Santander, located just behind the industrial wasteland. I am in no way trying to show the hotel is not nice. The rooms are clean, the bed sheets fresh, and the broken air conditioning makes us appreciate the 19˚ Celsius temperature outside as well as giving us a nostalgic nudge toward the stuffy heat of the Madrid stage. There is no gym or pool, however the misty rain that hasn’t lifted since our arrival makes a simple walk outside feel like a swim in the cool Atlantic waters. We are bonding as a company here. It is a secluded retreat to boost inter- company bonding and general camaraderie.
In all seriousness, Santander the city, is beautiful. Yesterday, Joel, Kelley, Bo and I ventured to the beach. We visited the Palace Magdalena and tried to imagine what life would be like in a castle by the sea. The rocky cliffs tumble into the ocean surf. My mom would have loved the view. Next to the palace is a small marine life zoo with sea lions, seals and penguins. They roared and barked for the tourists as we visited the outdoor boat museum nearby. The beach at 6pm was home to hundreds of surfers waiting in the rough water waiting for the perfect glassy wave. The water here looks like the water they dye royal blue at putt-putt golf courses in North Carolina. It breaks and the color swirls with the white foam and then turns back to the grey-blue sea.
We will work hard in Santander. Buss call is at noon; we have a dress rehearsal and then a show tonight at 9:00pm. I have heard the stage and theater are absolutely wonderful More later……for now……free breakfast!
