SPAIN TOUR 2007

Diary of the Tour
by Sarah Wroth, Boston Ballet corps de ballet member

July 18, 2007

I have decided to stop biting my nails for at least the next six weeks. It is a first step in the hopes of self improvement and life discovery on this my first ever touring ballet experience. For the next six fabulous weeks, Boston Ballet will bond as a team and share its talent and passion with the country of Spain. At present we are flooding a flight on Iberia Airlines. I dare say there is not a person in coach who is not aware of our presence. After leaving it setting in Boston we met the sun in Madrid and as a company greeted the first day of our tour.

It is a very strange sensation knowing people wherever you turn on the plane. I am so used to being surrounded by strangers when I travel to a new city. It is empowering traveling with a group of people all with the same purpose and destination.

The first day in Tenerife the company spent trying to right whatever traveling forward five hours does to their body clock. We need our bodies in perfect working order, and it is amazing how much a little flying can knock you out of whack. There are several methods people have used to beat their jet lag. Here are a couple...

option one - take a two hour nap upon arrival, wake up, and "party like it's 1999". Crash.

option two - go to lunch, realize you are tired, sleep for five hours and get up. Crash later.

option three - don't sleep, stay active, explore the city, bond with friends, stay up late. Crash.

Sum up of Day One's findings are that this tour is going to be amazing for every person lucky enough to be on it. Every experience will be fraught with learning and inter-company bonding. We will learn so much about each other as people and artists and share that knowledge with all our future audiences.
