BOSTON BALLET
SPAIN TOUR 2007
Diary of the Tour
by Sarah Wroth, Boston Ballet corps de ballet member
July 21, 2007
Today is our last full day in Tenerife. It is hard to believe we are done with one city already. The bus is pretty quiet considering the withdrawal from the opening night excitement. I think La Sylphide was a hit. The audience clapped enthusiastically for the almost home-town hero Yury Yanowsky and wept as Karine Seneca died of a broken heart. The death scene in La Sylphide is truly tragic and as in most white acts the corps is right there to support their leader as she falls. Even going so far as to physically catch her after she passes away. The corps has a front row seat and we can’t help getting sucked into the tragic love story.
He promised her his love. But his love is what kills her. We sigh as she sighs. We weep as she weeps. And when she dies our story is over. Each of us is a woman with a heart and a mind that knows that love to the point of self destruction is completely possible. I sure do miss my love. There are several of us in the company that find ourselves in an isolated state of vocation. By that I mean, when you have a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, etc. you have a person to go to for comfort and support, a refuge from work. Those of us who are single stranded in Spain must cling to each other for support and let the love stories we perform remind us of what we miss most at home.
