BOSTON BALLET
SPAIN TOUR 2007
Diary of the Tour

Today we kick the dust of Africa from our bus tires and travel to Las Palmas. It seems that on tour, just when you get used to a particular location and life rhythm, you move on.
I was so nervous last night. The Balanchine programs premiere was a scary event. The dress rehearsal was a little rough and with only three hours to change the spacing of an entire program to fit the shallow wing space of the Tenerife stage, everyone felt the need to focus. The dancers lingered onstage after rehearsal simply to absorb any final corrections for the show.
After a lunch by the Atlantic which is literally outside the stage door and a frantic arm up, the curtain rose on 17 women, palm up, blocking the Spanish moon light. We danced our hearts out. It was rough in spots but by the end, we felt unified and strong. Who Cares? was fun and energetic, fraught with Gershwin and soft shoe and The Four Temperaments was awesome. We had such a good time. What no one knew as the curtain closed on our last show in Tenerife was that there would be a later evening encore right outside the theater. We all, in field trip style, decided to meet in the lobby of the hotel at 1am to go out dancing. A group of 20 Boston Ballet dancers frolicked in the cool Spanish breeze as American tunes played by the water. Michael Jackson was a big hit and without a care in the world we tossed our arms and legs about proving that dance and joy are never far apart.
The next field trip location brought that group of dancers together with the Salsa contingent in a club called El Son. We danced through the smoke and laughter till the glimpses of post-show muscle fatigue began to sneak up. Cheek kisses good night brought us home and we slept heavily until breakfast, bus call and check out.
Observations and notes
Spanish toilet seats are strangely uncomfortable and oddly shaped. Try not to lose friends when dividing up a group check at the restaurant.
