SPAIN TOUR 2007

Diary of the Tour
by Sarah Wroth, Boston Ballet corps de ballet member

July 26, 2007

The sun is finally shining a big good morning this morning. It threatened to rain all day yesterday. It was gray and chilly, and I dare say our homesickness for a bit of Boston was quenched briefly. I am sitting in the hotel lobby, in what feels like the smallest community in the world. Every four seconds a neighbor comes up just to sit or say a friendly good morning. It is like living in the smallest of small towns where everywhere you go there is someone to greet or wave to. We are a traveling small town and with each day that passes we are getting a little more intimate.

A break in the poetic nature of our travels; I have a huge clot of eyelash glue lodged in my left peripheral view. It is so annoying. We wear fake eyelashes to enhance our stage expression, and it often takes the entire time in between shows to pick it all off. SO GLAMOUROUS!

We opened last night in Las Palmas. It was obvious who the hometown favorite was. Yury took a smiley bow after his performance as James and we all couldn’t help but chuckle, as a group of young girls in the front row waved emphatically and cheered “Yury! Yury! Yury!” It was what I would imagine it would feel like to be on the stage for a teenybopper band concert. There is something magical about dancing outside. The wind blows wisps of hair and costumes - even the bodies performing seem to be floating on some heavenly breeze. I can’t wait to perform Serenade with the wind on my face. One of the reasons we all dance is the ability to fly, to achieve the impossible on stage. I think nature will only add to that. We’ll see.
