Boston Ballet: Looking back, what are some highlights from your career?
Evelyn: Highlights… dancing in the nationally televised broadcast of The Tempest and Cinderella, dancing at The White House for President Reagan, opening nights have their own incredible energy about them. Probably my favorite times were spent working with a partner and getting something really honed. I enjoyed rehearsing something really well – finding the unity of dancing it together and bringing that unity to the stage in a performance. Sharing a success is as good as it gets. I was blessed with having an incredible partner, Anthony Randazzo.
What were some challenging points?
Physically, I had some elements in my technique that I had to really struggle with and work with. I didn’t have perfect facilities. I was always working to show the best line that I could to the audience. I worked diligently at perfecting that which was imperfect.
What are some highlights after your dance career?
Of course, probably the biggest highlight in my personal life would be my two children. Professionally within my teaching career, the feeling and enjoyment of giving back the knowledge that I’ve gained through the years.
Describe the special relationship between a teacher and student?
I think all of us have a teacher that really impacted and changed our lives. Teachers have the ability to change young peoples lives – the way they see life, approach elements of their lives, how they grow, and their thought process. Teaching is a tremendous responsibility, second to parenting. It’s essential that as a ballet teacher you approach teaching in a loving, gentle, kind and encouraging manner.
