Summer Dance Program Auditions

In order to provide our world-renowned dance instruction to the most diverse and talented students, auditions for Boston Ballet School’s Summer Dance Program will be held in 24 cities throughout the United States.

During auditions, participants are evaluated by faculty members from Boston Ballet School based on their performance in the audition class. In the week following the audition, accepted students will receive an invitation to join SDP at one of our two BBS campuses: Boston or Newton. The campus to which a student is assigned to is at the discretion of BBS faculty and is not negotiable under any circumstance.

Online pre-registration for all auditions will begin on Friday, November 1. See below for the full schedule of our audition tour. Online pre-registration for all auditions will close at 11:59 pm EST on the Wednesday before the audition.

AUDITION FAQ

What should I wear for my audition?

Women should wear a black leotard as well as tights in the color which is closest to their natural skin tone or the color in which they feel most comfortable. In addition, women will need both technique and pointe shoes.

Men should wear black tights and a white t-shirt.

If I have a birthday between auditions and the start of the program, which age group should I audition with?

The audition that a student attends should be determined by the student’s age on the day of the audition. Even if the student will be a different age by the time of the actual program, they should audition with the age group they are at the time of the audition.

If my child will be 11 years old at the time of the audition but will turn 12 by the time the program begins, is she/he eligible?

Yes, all students who were born on or before June 28, 2008 are eligible to audition. Students who are 11 years old during the audition should register for the youngest audition group being offered for their city.

What if I am unable to attend an audition in-person?

Attending an audition in person is strongly encouraged. If you are not able to attend one of our auditions, however, you may submit a video audition. Please review the VIDEO AUDITION GUIDELINES.

What do I need to do to prepare for my audition?

Students should arrive at the appointed time and location wearing the appropriate dance attire (see above). No headshots or resumes will be accepted.

If a student did not pre-register for the audition, they should also have $45 in cash. While students may register on the day of the audition, all students are highly encouraged to pre-register.

Do women need to be on pointe to audition and be eligible for SDP?

Yes. Pointe is a core part of the curriculum for all women enrolled in SDP.

When will my child be notified of the audition result?

Audition results will be sent out within five business days of the audition. Any student who does not hear back within five business days is encouraged to check any spam folders before reaching out to SDP@bostonballet.org.

My child wasn’t accepted to the program or was assigned to a different campus than I wished for them to attend. May I audition again?

No. Students are not eligible to audition more than once per year. Furthermore, students may only audition in one manner: in person or via a video submission. Students are, however, welcome and encouraged to audition for SDP in successive years.

May I request and receive feedback from my child’s audition?

Due to the number of participants in our audition tour, we are unable to provide individual feedback.
ion tour we are unable to provide feedback.

We celebrate diversity while fostering a team spirit.
