Biography

Haley Schwan began her dance training at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., and later at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2010, she joined Staatsballett Berlin as a member of the corps de ballet. In her five seasons there, she performed a vast repertoire of classical and contemporary works, including solos created for her in Marco Goecke’s And The Sky on that Cloudy Day and Itzik Galili’s Open Square.

Her classical repertoire includes George Balanchine’s Ballet Imperial, Patrice Bart’s Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Nutcracker; John Cranko’s Onegin and Romeo & Juliet, Nacho Duato’s The Sleeping Beauty, Vladimir Malakhov’s Four Seasons, La Peri, La Bayadère, and Alexei Ratmansky’s Namouna. Her contemporary repertoire includes works by Maurice Béjart, Nacho Duato, Marco Goecke, Giorgio Madia, Tim Plegge, and Angelin Preljocaj.

Schwan moved to New York City in 2015 to explore her art form from a new perspective as a freelance dancer and choreographer. She worked with Emery LeCrone and Twyla Tharp, tried her hand at acting in the immersive theater production of S. Dylan Zwickel’s Here We Dance, and choreographed Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora’s performance of “Black Widow” for the MTV VMAs.

Schwan joined Boston Ballet as an artist of the Company in 2017. She was promoted to second soloist in 2020 and soloist in 2022.
