Kids & Families at the Ballet

Boston Ballet warmly welcomes families and children with the safety of our artists, staff, and audiences as our top priority. With a little preparation, attending the ballet can be a wonderful experience for the whole family and gives children the opportunity to explore different cultures and expand their already active imaginations.

Kids & Families Health and Safety

All patrons, including children, attending a live, indoor Boston Ballet performance must present proof of vaccination or proof of a recent negative COVID test before entering the venue and must wear a mask inside the theater at all times, regardless of vaccination status.

  • Proof of vaccination may include showing either a vaccination card or a photo of the card.

  • Fully vaccinated is defined as at least 14 days after receiving either a two-dose or one-dose COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Anyone who is unable to be vaccinated or to verify their vaccination status for any reason, including children under the age of 12, will be required to show proof of a recent negative COVID test before entering (PCR test within 72 hours or rapid antigen test within 24 hours).

  • Proof of a negative test can be in the form of a photo or email of negative test results from a clinic, testing center, medical professional, or a time-stamped photo of an at-home test.

Entry will be denied for patrons who do not follow the protocols as required above. Please note, we are not socially distancing in the theater. For more information, view our full health and safety policy.

What are the age recommendations for each show?

This season encompasses a wide variety of ballets, some that tell a story, others focused on the music and dance. Most have 30 minutes to one hour of dancing followed by an intermission. Many children can remain quiet, attentive, and seated for a one-hour stretch, but you know your child best.

Please call our Box Office for suggestions of productions children might enjoy and more information about the lengths of performances. Note that infants and children under 2 years of age are not allowed in the theater, and The Nutcracker is recommended for children ages 5 and up.

Is the Citizens Bank Opera House accessible to children?

Absolutely. The Citizens Bank Opera House offers stroller storage, booster seats, and family bathrooms. Just ask an usher for assistance when you arrive.

Many kids enjoy exploring the historic and palace-like space before the show begins. The Opera House is a beautiful building, with plenty of hidden details in its architecture.

What should I consider when buying tickets for my family?

The Mezzanine section’s stadium-style seating may provide a better view for small theatergoers. Families with young children might also prefer aisle seats, in case of bathroom emergencies or restless legs. Booster seats are available for anyone who needs a little extra height—just ask an usher. Please note: Every patron regardless of age must have a ticket; lap-sitting is not permitted.

Can I bring food into the theater?

The Citizens Bank Opera House sells a variety of drinks and tasty treats. If you’re craving a larger meal or have some picky eaters in your group, try one of the many surrounding restaurants. Please note, no outside food is allowed in the Opera House.

For more information and tips on enjoying your performance, please download our Children and Families info sheet or visit our Frequently Asked Questions page. We hope to see you at the theater soon!
