Age: Students must be between the ages of 12* and 18** when the program begins on Sunday, June 26. While 11-year-olds may audition in January, they must be 12 by the start of the program.
* Students from outside the US and Canada must be at least 14 years old when the program begins.
Experience: All ladies must enter the program with pointe experience, though we recognize that many of our younger students will be very new to pointe during January auditions. Starting pointe during the 2021-2022 school year is enough experience for a student to audition.
Is there a vaccination requirement for Summer Dance Program?
Yes, vaccinations against COVID-19 will be required of all students enrolled in this summer’s program. (They will also be required of all students participating in any of our in-person auditions this winter.)
Students who are not eligible to be vaccinated – based on their age – or who are approved for a medical exemption may still enroll in the program, but they are not eligible for housing and must register as a commuter student.
Boston Ballet’s policy to consider medical exemption requests is consistent with applicable federal, state, and local law, and in accordance with CDC guidance. Philosophical exemptions are not accepted.
Will I be considered for the Boston Studio or the Newton Studio?
The training for Summer Dance Program is spread across our two studios in Boston and Newton. This summer, ladies ages 12-15 will train at our Newton Studio, and ladies ages 15-18 will train at our Boston Studio. While the same will mostly be true for men, exceptions may be made across both age groups.
Are photos/resumes needed for the audition process?
No. Beyond the completion of the supplemental audition survey (link provided in audition registration confirmation email), students should not provide any additional materials.
When will I be notified of audition results?
Audition results for in-person and virtual auditions will be sent out within five business days of the audition. For pre-recorded video auditions, results will be sent out on a rolling basis beginning in January.
Accepted students will have approximately two weeks to register for the program.
A student’s results will be sent to all email addresses provided in the supplemental audition survey. Any student who does not hear back within five business days should email SDP@BOSTONBALLET.ORG after checking any Spam folders, etc.
If I’m not accepted to the program, may I audition again?
Students are not eligible to audition more than once per year. Furthermore, students may only audition in one manner: via in-person audition, via live Zoom class, or via pre-recorded video submission.
Students are, however, welcome and encouraged to audition for SDP in successive years.
May I request and receive feedback from my audition?
Due to the number of students who audition each year, we are unable to provide individual feedback.
At my audition for SDP, will I also be considered for a place in BOSTON BALLET SCHOOL’S PROFESSIONAL DIVISION at Walnut Hill School for the Arts?
Due to the high volume of students auditioning for Summer Dance Program, we are unable to specifically evaluate each student for both SDP and our Professional Division simultaneously.
Though it is possible that adjudicators during SDP auditions may identify potential candidates for our program at Walnut Hill, the only way to guarantee that you are specifically evaluated for our Professional Division is to AUDITION AND APPLY DIRECTLY THROUGH WALNUT HILL.
