Viktorina Kapitonova in Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker

Viktorina Kapitonova, a native of Russia, studied at the Kazan Ballet School and Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre Academy. She is a laureate of the the Young Ballet of Russia Competition (2003) as well as Russia’s Arabesque Contest (2006, 2008). Kapitonova started her career as a soloist in Russia’s Kazan Ballet before joining Stanislavsky Theatre Ballet in Moscow.
In 2010, Kapitonova joined Ballett Zürich as a principal dancer, performing leading roles in works by Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Wayne McGregor, Christian Spuck, and Heinz Spoerli. Spuck created the title role of Anna Karenina especially for her, and she originated the dual role of Odette/Odile in Alexei Ratmansky’s Swan Lake.
Kapitonova joined Boston Ballet in 2018, where she has expanded both her classical and contemporary repertoire, including Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella (Cinderella and Fairy Godmother), Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot’s Giselle (Giselle), and Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker (Sugar Plum Fairy, Dew Drop, and Snow Queen) and Swan Lake (Odette/Odile). Her portrayal of Giselle was named one of The Boston Globe’s “Top 10 Dance Performances of 2019.”
She has also performed principal and featured roles in George Balanchine’s Apollo and Mozartiana (staged by Suzanne Farrell), Florence Clerc’s La Bayadère, Jorma Elo’s Bach Cello Suites and Carmen, William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Roméo et Juliette, Mikko Nissinen’s Raymonda, Rudolf Nureyev’s Don Quixote, Helen Pickett’s 月夜 Tsukiyo, and Hans van Manen’s Trois Gnossiennes.
Beyond Boston, Kapitonova has been featured at international galas including the Laguna Dance Festival Gala and the Apollo Arts Gala in California, where critics praised her “radiant artistry that bridges vulnerability and strength.”
Through every role, Kapitonova seeks to connect movement and soul—embodying her belief that in a healthy body lives a luminous spirit, and in every dance, a piece of the heart remains.
Kapitonova joined Boston Ballet in 2018 as a principal dancer.
