The next generation of stars.

ONE NIGHT ONLY  |  MAY 13, 2026  |  7 PM

Next Generation is the annual, exciting one-night-only performance that empowers talented young dancers to reach for the stars. Featuring Boston Ballet II and Boston Ballet’s Donna Egan Graduate Program artists, and students of Boston Ballet School’s Professional Division at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, this is a performance of exceptional dance, showcasing rising talent in the dance world.

These young dancers represent the next generation of talent, as they aspire to careers in professional dance companies. The performance is elevated by live orchestral accompaniment by the Next Generation Orchestra, comprised of young musicians from top youth orchestras and music schools around the city.

Concerto Barocco

George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco began as an exercise for the School of American Ballet and several years later it became part of New York City Ballet’s repertoire, presented on the company’s first performance in 1948. A close and vital advisor to Boston Ballet during its inaugural years in the early 1960s, Balanchine gifted Concerto Barocco to founder E. Virginia Williams. The ballet was included in the second performance of the newly established Boston Ballet. Set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, the two lead dancers represent each violin.

Critic Clive Barnes wrote about the ballet, “The three hallmarks of the American classic style are poetry, athleticism, and musicality, and these three graces are exquisitely exploited by Concerto Barocco.”

Boston Ballet in Bournonville’s Napoli by Rosalie O’Connor

Napoli

Napoli was created in 1842 for the Royal Danish Ballet by the most famous Danish choreographer August Bournonville. Napoli returns to Next Generation for the first time since the inaugural 2010 performance. This year, the ballet features a unique mixed cast of dancers from Boston Ballet II, Graduate Program, and students of the Professional Division at Walnut Hill School for the Arts.

Premiere

Boston Ballet Second Soloist DANIEL RUBIN will create a new work for Boston Ballet II and Graduate Program dancers. On the new work Rubin says, “The ballet is a study on self-reflection and the fracturing of the psyche into archetypical forms. Working with these talented dancers, I sought to integrate their diverse talents across different modes of movement into a polystylistic work. We incorporated the unifying factors of intention, softness, play, and presence.”

Tufts and New England Conservatory (NEC) of Music student Aviva Senzon has written an original score for violin, two B-flat clarinets, tenor saxophone, and piano, that will be performed live.

Please note: Applications for the Next Generation Orchestra are not being accepted for the 2026 performance. Please check this page in Fall 2026 for updates regarding future opportunities with the Orchestra.
