Boston Ballet Functional Screen

This screen is a collection of standardized tests used to identify potential movement inefficiencies, strength imbalances, and flexibility limitations. The results of this screen can help support individual injury prevention programs, however, further assessment of ballet technique should also take place.

Concussion Protocol

This protocol was created to guide clinicians through post-concussion care in the event of a head-strike. The primary goal is to return the dancer to work in a safe and systematic fashion. This protocol is intended for use by a physical therapist skilled in concussion assessment and rehabilitation. It should be used to promote clear communication and expectations between the dancer, physical therapists, physician team, and artistic staff. While the specifics of this protocol are designed for a professional ballet dancer, the principles can be extrapolated to suit the needs of a dancer at a different skill level or different style of dance.

Concussion Evaluation

This evaluation tool can be used by a physical therapist for initial evaluation after a head-strike. A clinician should have competence performing the tests and measures to determine which assessments are clinically indicated and how to interpret results. This is one piece in the comprehensive care of a dancer, therefore, please see the concussion protocol for further care coordination with appropriate medical providers.

Low-Risk Metatarsal BSI Rehabilitation Guideline

This guideline is intended to aid clinicians through rehabilitation post Grade 3 low-risk metatarsal bone stress injury (BSI). The primary goal is to return the dancer to work in a safe and systematic fashion. This guideline is designed for use by a physical therapist. It should be used to promote clear communication and expectations between the dancer, physical therapists, team physician, and artistic staff.

Dancers are elite athletes who require a tailored approach to physical therapy. From addressing overuse injuries to optimizing flexibility, strength, and joint stability, our protocols are developed with the unique biomechanics of ballet in mind.
