Biography
James Cunningham’s dance education began at the Mid Ohio Valley Ballet Academy. In 2010, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Cincinnati. While earning his BFA in dance on full scholarship, he began his career as a professional dancer with Cincinnati Ballet. Cunningham danced with Cincinnati Ballet for 11 seasons with a promotion to soloist in 2016. He joined Grand Rapids Ballet in 2019.
Cunningham’s repertoire includes George Balanchine’s Rubies, Serenade, and Who Cares?, Lar Lubovitch’s Elemental Brubeck, Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty, Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room, as well as Alice and Wonderland, Carmen, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
He has performed works by choreographers including Val Caniparoli, Alejandro Cerrudo, Nicolo Fonte, Darrell Grand Moultrie, James Kudelka, Jiří Kylián, Annabelle Lopez-Ochoa, Trey McIntyre, Victoria Morgan, Ohad Naharin, Justin Peck, Yuri Possokhov, Christopher Stowell, and Septime Webre.
Cunningham performs in The Sleeping Beauty with Boston Ballet as an artist of the Company.
