The Music

P.I. Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker score is the soundtrack to the holiday season. The memorable and magical score is performed brilliantly by the Boston Ballet Orchestra at every single performance, led by Music Director Mischa Santora and Assistant Conductor Tianyi Ren.

“There was no lack of strong emotion in the performance of the Boston Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Mischa Santora. The music was, as usual, superb.”

Mikko Nissinen

This season marks Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen’s 25th season with Boston Ballet. Through his leadership, he has defined the Company’s image, cultivating a compelling and dynamic collection of classical, neoclassical, and contemporary repertoire, including the Company’s beloved The Nutcracker.

Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker premiered in 2012. It is a reimagining of the classic tale that blends tradition with a fresh sense of wonder. With grand, hand-painted sets and more than 350 exquisite costumes, crafted in Massachusetts and designed by acclaimed scenic designer and costume designer Robert Perdziola, the production transforms the stage from the warmth of a holiday party to the dazzling Kingdom of the Sweets. It’s a spectacle created with care, artistry, and a deep love for storytelling—designed to resonate with audiences today.

“To be a ballet company of the future, which is what we aim, is to be truly relevant for today’s people.
I don’t want us to be a museum or a church, but a living theater for today’s people.”
–Mikko Nissinen, Boston Ballet’s Artistic Director and choreographer of The Nutcracker
